The poor inhabitants of the town, who had been celebrating the safe arrival of the convoy with its promise of plenty, were forced to flee to the southern end of the Rock once more. One of their number, a priest named Father Mesa, had the presence of mind to rescue the venerated statue of the Virgin Mary, ‘Our Lady of Europe’, from the chapel shrine in which it was kept, and took it to safety before it could be consumed by the flames.

Some of those of the garrison who were at liberty to do so, braved the bombardment to see what loot was to be found in the abandoned and battered houses. Most of the soldiers had been on short and unappetizing rations for some time, and they were indignant to find some storerooms bulging with stocks of hoarded food and luxuries. John Drinkwater recalled:

The extreme distress to which the soldiers had been reduced by the venary conduct of the hucksters and liquor-dealers, in hoarding, or rather concealing the stocks, to enhance the price of what was exposed for sale, raised amongst the troops … a spirit of revenge.22
